Chambers and Circuits
The human heart has four chambers: two upper atria and two lower ventricles. It functions with a dual-circuit system:
- Pulmonary Circuit: The right side of the heart receives deoxygenated blood and pumps it to the lungs for gas exchange.
- Systemic Circuit: The left side of the heart receives oxygenated blood from the lungs and pumps it to the rest of the body.
Blood Vessels: The Network of Life
The blood vessels form a closed loop of channels that facilitate blood flow from the heart to various parts of the body and back again.
- Arteries: These vessels carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart. The aorta is the main artery, branching out into smaller arteries, which in turn divide into tiny arterioles in tissues.
- Veins: After oxygen exchange, veins carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart. Venules converge into larger veins, culminating in the superior and inferior vena cavae.
- Capillaries: These are microscopic vessels where the exchange of water, nutrients, and waste products occurs between blood and tissues.

Blood, the vehicle of the cardiovascular system, is composed of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. Each component plays a pivotal role:
- Red Blood Cells (Erythrocytes): Carry oxygen using hemoglobin.
- White Blood Cells (Leukocytes): Serve as key players in the immune response.
- Platelets (Thrombocytes): Are crucial for blood clotting.
- Plasma: The liquid portion of blood, comprising water, proteins, salts, lipids, and glucose.
